Prologue
In the quaint town of Cliff, New Mexico, nestled amongst twenty sprawling acres on a lofty mesa, stood a home that defied all local norms. It was a seventeen hundred square foot ranch house, resplendent in its contrast to the humble dwellings and trailer parks scattered about. This wasn’t just a home; it was an estate.
The swimming pool shimmered in the arid New Mexican sun, an oasis in the desert, while the front yard was adorned with a pyramid, an obelisk, and numerous columns as if transported from ancient civilizations.
This architectural curiosity wouldn’t have been out of place in the glitzy neighborhoods of California, but here, it was an alien spacecraft among horse-drawn wagons, a stark disparity against the simplicity of the 300-soul community. It was an unassuming wonder, an oddball mansion surrounded by ordinary houses and mobile homes, as alluring as an unsolved mystery.
Once inside, the house was a veritable museum, a tribute to global artistry and a testament to the eclectic tastes of its occupants. A frenzied riot of color and texture, each room was adorned with tribal masks from Africa, exquisite paintings from the classical art hubs of Europe, richly woven blankets and rugs by Native Americans, bronze statues crafted by the gifted hands of Western American artists, and abstract paintings that would give Picasso a run for his money.
No corner was bereft of artistic genius, no shelf barren. It was a place where worlds and epochs collided, united by the love of art.
Treading through this cultural labyrinth, one would eventually reach the main bedroom where Rita Alter lay. Once vibrant and full of life, she was now eighty-two with her memory fading and her body frail. Her nephew, a doting man in his forties, and her caretaker, a kindly woman with patience of a saint, were her only company. She spent most of her days in a semi-lucid state, taking solace in episodes of her beloved television show, Walker, Texas Ranger. During the darkness, Rita’s jumbled mind gave way to many sleepless nights.
This night was different, she found herself high on top of a mountain ridge. The cool, thin air filled her lungs, and she exhaled misty clouds that dissipated quickly into the atmosphere.
Each step she took was deliberate, bringing her closer to the precipice of the cliff. The rugged terrain under her feet felt both alien and familiar, and the world below her stretched infinitely into the horizon.
The vast landscape was a patchwork of golden valleys, hills, and rivers, basking in the hues of twilight. With the wind blowing her hair gently, the sensation of being atop the world was exhilarating.
When she approached the edge, there was no trepidation in her heart, no vertigo making her dizzy. Instead, there was profound serenity. The sheer drop of the cliff might have represented danger, yet for Rita, it symbolized boundless possibilities.
Standing on the precipice, she watched the horizon. The first rays of the sun painted the sky with brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold, bathing her face with the warmth of its sun as the sun ascended, and she felt an inner awakening. It was as though she was not merely witnessing the sunrise but experiencing the birth of a new chapter in her life.
Suddenly, the familiar chimes of her alarm clock pulled Rita from the mountaintop, bringing her back to her cozy bedroom. She sat up, the memory of her dream remained vivid, and she pondered its significance.
This recurring dream had been a part of Rita’s life for as long as she could remember. Each time she experienced it, the sensation of standing on the edge of that cliff and looking over the world below remained unchanged, a feeling of peace and understanding.
This particular morning felt different. There was an undeniable shift in Rita’s perception, a sense of clarity. When the scorching sun climbed its zenith, Rita stirred from her long slumber. Her eyes, often vacant, were alight with a bright, almost mischievous glint, her lips curved into a knowing smile that startled both her nephew and the caretaker.
With a frail hand, she beckoned them closer, her whisper carrying a surprising intensity. She pointed to a nondescript corner of the room behind the bedroom door and said, “In our secret life, we got away with everything. No one knows, no one has the slightest clue about Jerry and I. We lived a fabulous adventure together, a secret so well-guarded it stayed hidden in plain sight. Soon, I will be with Jerry, and we will reminisce about our secret life together.”
Her voice trailed off, leaving a palpable shroud of mystery. Rita Alter, the collector of arts, the lover of a simple television show, and the woman who shared a secret life with a man named Jerry, was an enigma. The riddle of her life and her home, a treasure trove of secrets, now challenged everyone who dared to uncover it.
The town of Cliff, and its 300 unsuspecting inhabitants, were blissfully unaware of the adventure that had unfolded in their midst. The mystery of Rita Alter was just beginning to unfurl, promising to shake the serenity of this sleepy town to its very core.
Chapter 1
A Chance Meeting
The sun beat down on the winding roads leading up to the Catskills Mountains, where a quaint diner with red leather booths and black and white checkered floors stood. The year is 1955, and vacationers from New York City flock to this mountain resort, known as the Borscht Belt, for a break from the hustle and bustle of city life. Among them, a young woman, her cherry-red dress standing out against the lush greenery surrounding the building. As she entered, the familiar smell of freshly brewed coffee and sizzling bacon saturated her senses.
Rita Sinofsky, a symphony of timeless beauty at twenty years old, stands tall and proud at 5 foot 5 inches. Her brunette hair cascades in loose waves above her shoulders, framing her face in a classic bob with delicate bangs that sweep to the right. Deep brown eyes, filled with tenderness and innocence, are accentuated by thick and expressive eyebrows that add an air of mystery. A long, regal nose leads down to a pair of soft, petal-pink lips that reveals a charming debutante’s smile.
Her face boasts gentle contours and a defined jawline, delicate cheekbones adding an air of sophistication. Her complexion is kissed by a peachy hue, reminiscent of a summer sunset. Rita’s figure may not be the curviest, but every line and angle exudes elegance. Her toned arms that hint at hidden strength beneath her slender frame, and her long legs resemble those of a graceful dancer.
Rita sat alone in a cozy booth by the window, the lukewarm coffee in front of her reflecting the depths of her despair. She couldn’t fathom why she had come here, to this small diner on a dreary Wednesday afternoon. Her thoughts interrupted when the door chimed and Jerry Alter, an ordinary-looking man walked in. His raven-black hair, parted to the side, revealing a high forehead with slight hints of a receding hairline. Thick black glasses perched on his nose, giving him an endearing nerdy look. His features were unremarkable — a parrot-like nose, flat cheeks, and an elongated chin — but there’s something about him that drew her attention.
As he approached the counter to order a coffee and slice of apple pie, Rita couldn’t help but notice how his eyes lingered on her for a moment longer than necessary. He then made his way to a booth facing hers and settled in. Rita couldn’t help but feel curious when the man flashed her a friendly smile. He seemed oblivious to her inner turmoil, as she struggled to hide the tears welling up in her eyes. She forced a smile back at him, trying to maintain a sense of normalcy despite the chaos inside her.
Determined to distract herself from her thoughts, Rita took out her book and tried to focus on reading. But she couldn’t help being drawn towards the man sitting across from her.
When his order arrived, he instructed the waiter to serve his slice of apple pie to the seemingly forlorn woman, ordering an additional piece for himself.
The waiter nodded and walked over to Rita’s table, placing the pie in front of her. “Compliments of the gentleman,” he said, pointing to Jerry.
She looked up in surprise as he gestured to the pie with a kind smile, urging her to enjoy it.
With a glimmer of warmth in her heart, Rita accepted the gesture and thanked him with a small smile.
Now looking rather out of place with his crooked glasses and awkward attempts at suaveness, gifted her a warm, toothy grin. His kind eyes sparkled with genuine concern as he noticed the distress in her posture.
Touched by his sincere attempt to comfort her, she called out to him, “Oh, that’s sweet of you. Thank you. Come sit with me.”
Jerry obliged, fumbling over his own feet and knocking over his cup of coffee in the process. With a sheepish grin, he chuckled, “Oops, clumsy me. I thought, you know, you might enjoy a slice of apple pie, my name’s Jerry, by the way.”
Rita forced a faint smile as she introduced herself, “I’m Rita.” Her eyes flickered with sadness, “Look, I appreciate the gesture, but I’m not in the mood for pie right now.”
An earnest looking Jerry asked, “I can tell something’s bothering you. If you don’t mind me asking, what’s going on?”
Hesitating, she let out a sigh, “Well, it’s that I came all the way from New York City for a summer job as a waitress. But when I arrived today, they told me the position was already filled. I was depending on that job.”
A concerned expression crossed Jerry’s face, “I’m sorry to hear that. That’s tough luck.” He paused for a moment while offering some hope, “But don’t worry, maybe I can help. I play saxophone in some bands here in one of the resorts here and have contacts at various restaurants. I’ll ask around and see if there are any openings for you.”
Rita’s face lit up, “That would be incredible! Thank you so much,” taking a bite of the warm apple pie in front of her. Curiosity piqued, she asked, “Aside from being a musician, do you have any other passions or hobbies?”
Jerry smirked, “I dabble in various things here and there. Gotta make ends meet in a small town like this.”
Amused by his sly response, Rita quipped back, “Yes, opportunities are everywhere if you know where to look.”
Returning the playful banter, Jerry winked, “And I have a feeling we might discover some interesting opportunities together.”
Their eyes sparkled with excitement and a hint of mischief as they exchanged knowing glances, maintaining an air of mystery even while being friendly and engaging. The conversation flowed between them, each dropping hints and teasing the other with their knowledge and experiences. As they exchanged stories and jokes, she felt her tense shoulders loosen and her worries dissipate in the warmth of Jerry’s laughter. It was as though they had been friends for years, instead of only meeting a few hours ago. She couldn’t recall the last time she felt so comfortable with someone.
They lingered in the diner long after their cups of coffee and plates of pie were empty. Their conversation was scattered, filled with pauses and quiet laughter. When she excused herself to use the restroom, she glanced at Jerry’s reflection in the wall-length mirror as she walked away from their booth. His eyes were darting around the room, making sure no one was watching as he carefully extracted a wallet from a coat hanging off a nearby chair and slipped it into his own pocket. Her heart raced at this unexpected discovery, but instead of shock or dismay, she felt a surge of exhilaration at the thought this secret part of Jerry and couldn’t wait to discover what other secrets he was hiding.
As she replayed the audacity of Jerry’s nefarious actions, she couldn’t help but wonder if this is all too good to be true. Could he understand the complexities of her life, or was it a facade? She wanted to believe that he shared her kindred spirit, but a part of her couldn’t shake off the feeling of doubt and fear. Would he accept her or would he turn away once he knew her secret?
As she walked back to her booth, Rita couldn’t help but giggle, a warm feeling bubbling up in her chest. Jerry’s company had been unexpectedly delightful, and she found herself drawn to his easy charm and sharp wit. “You certainly know how to brighten up a young lady,” she smiled, taking one last bite of apple pie before returning to their conversation.
After a brief moment of thoughtfulness, Rita decided to take a chance and ask Jerry if he would join her for breakfast tomorrow morning. Her cheeks flushed with nervous excitement as she waited for his response.
“Going against the norms, aren’t we?” Jerry, intrigued by the invitation, raised an eyebrow, “I would love to join you tomorrow morning.”
Rita’s heart fluttered with relief as Jerry accepted. She quickly made plans for where they would meet, “It’s a date then, Tomorrow, 9 o’clock, at Joe’s.”
Jerry extended his hand across the table, but before he could speak, she playfully smacked it away and stood up. She slid next to Jerry and gave him a big kiss on the cheek, sealing their breakfast plans for the following day. Jerry was taken aback but couldn’t help but smile at her boldness and confidence.
As she walked away and couldn’t stop grinning. Despite the earlier wallet incident, she looked forward for what tomorrow would bring — a potential new romance with an intriguing and charming man.
The next morning, Rita strode towards the entrance of Joe’s diner, her heels clicked against the pavement like a metronome. The morning sunlight filtered through the large windows, casting shadows on her perfectly styled hair. She wore a knee-length A-line skirt with a subtle floral pattern, accentuating her slender figure, swaying with each step.
Her blouse, a delicate shade of pink, buttoned up to her neck and adorned with a small bow. The short sleeves puffed at her shoulders, ending above her elbows. She completed the outfit with low-heeled pumps in a matching shade to her belt, sheer stockings that hugged her legs, and dainty pearl jewelry.
To shield her eyes from the bright sun, she wore cat-eye sunglasses that complemented her outfit. In one hand, she carried a small leather clutch purse containing all the essentials for an upscale breakfast outing.
As she entered the diner, heads turned as she made her way towards Jerry’s table. He stood up, flashing his charming smile and extending his hand.
Rita smirked and sidestepped the handshake, pulling him into an embrace and leaving a kiss on his cheek, “Morning, Jerry.”
Jerry’s eyes lit up as they met hers. “You look radiant today.”
“Well, I thought I’d match the ambiance of this place,” she gestured around, drawing his attention to the diverse mix of patrons, “quite the crowd we have here.”
Jerry chuckled, scanning the room. “Indeed, and here I thought our breakfast would be the most intriguing part of my day.”
As they talked, Rita’s gaze was repeatedly drawn to the flashy couple a few tables away, an older gentleman with a receding hairline and a noticeable paunch, walking arm-in-arm with a breathtaking red-haired beauty whose age was leagues apart from his. The woman dazzled with a mosaic of glimmering jewels, drawing attention from every corner of the restaurant. She had the air of a queen bee that’d snared a hapless drone with her irresistible charms. She wanted the world to notice her snaring prowess and ogle at her opulent sugar daddy.
Rita concluded the woman was what they affectionately term as a ‘gold digger.’ “You see that lady over there?” Rita whispered conspiratorially. “I bet you she has a story.”
Jerry leaned in, a twinkle in his eyes. “Do tell.”
“Remember the old story about the Catskills? About how husbands bring their mistresses here, far from the prying eyes of society?”
Jerry smirked, “So, you’re saying she’s the mistress?”
“Let’s just say her jewelry screams more than money. There’s a story there.”
Intrigued and playing along, asked, “And what about the man? He looks like he could be her father!”
Leaning closer, her eyes sparkling mischievously. “That’s the beauty of it, in any other place, they’d be just a regular father and daughter. But here… It’s all about appearances.”
As they enjoyed a delicious breakfast at the eccentric restaurant, their conversation flowing like a well-rehearsed stand-up comedy routine. Rita, kept an eye on the shiny bauble-laden redhead a few tables away. The gears in her head whirring. She spent the night concocting a plan to test Jerry’s appetite for risk and gauge whether he’s the perfect partner for her adventurous life.
Their playful banter was interrupted when the opulent woman and her “daddy” stood up to leave. On cue, Rita stood as well, grabbing Jerry’s arm. “Come on, let’s make an exit.”
Confused but intrigued, Jerry allowed her to pull him along.
As they neared the exit, Rita’s eyes scanned the bustling crowd, searching for her target. When she spotted the redhead, she lunged forward with excitement. “Darling! It’s been ages!” pulling the surprised woman into a tight hug. He watched with amusement and admiration as Rita charmed her way through the exchange, smoothly slipping off pieces of jewelry from the unsuspecting woman.
After parting ways, Rita turned to Jerry with a mischievous glint in her eye.
“You didn’t…” he started, his voice full of surprise and awe.
She winked and leaned in close. “We all have our secrets, But I have a sneaking suspicion ours might be more similar than you think.”
Jerry’s mind raced with possibilities as he realized that his breakfast companion is someone he could finally share his secret life with. He couldn’t help but grin at the thought.
“Perhaps we can put our mutual interests to good use?”
A spark of intrigue lit up in Jerry’s eyes. “Do you have a plan?”
“I just might.”
With a Cheshire cat grin on his face, Jerry wrapped his arm around Rita’s shoulder, drawing her closer. They exchanged a conspiratorial glance, sealing a bond that would lead to a lifetime of thrilling adventures and unforgettable moments together.
